A wicket-keeper in cricket is the player on the fielding side who stands behind the wicket or stumps being guarded by the batsman currently on strike. He is the only member of the fielding side who is allowed to wear gloves and external leg guards. As an specialist role, the wicket-keeper is sometimes called upon a bowl, in which case another member of the fielding side temporarily keeps wicket. The wicket-keepers major function is to stop deliveries that pass the batsman as well as to dismiss the batsman in several ways.

Wicket-keeping is no easy job. It is even more difficult when the one in this position is already suffering from hand bruises and sores. The public do not notice this but sometimes the wicket-keeper experiences pain when the ball thuds into his gloves and as a result he appears to become reluctant with the ball and can even make simple mistakes.
