Cards Talk with Strauss

Joe Strauss joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph Jr. for a couple segments on Team 1380 Friday afternoon.

The guys talked about Strauss’ article in the Post-Dispatch Friday, and they talked about the Cardinals’ payroll and what LaRussa said about what the team should do this offseason.

Strauss said that if Tony went to another club to be a GM at some point, he thinks it would have to be a big market team.

The guys also talked about LaRussa’s relationship with GM John Mozeliak.

Friday Rams Update

Jim Thomas joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph Jr. Friday to preview the Rams’ regular season opener in Philadelphia.

The guys started out talking about the injury report, and Eagles wide receiver Reggie Brown was listed as doubtful, which means there is less than a 75% chance that he can play. Thomas said that Fakhir Brown is healthy and will play.

Jim gave his three keys for the Rams to win the game: they have to establish the ball, their big players have to play big, and they have to keep Brian Westbrook from controlling the ballgame.

With Pisa Tinoisamoa playing, the Rams overall speed on defense is pretty good, but it will be difficult to stop Westbrook. The Eagles’ offensive line is probably the biggest one that the Rams will face all year.

Thomas said that he doesn’t think Steven Jackson will have 25 carries or rack up 100 yards because of the history of guys who have held out.

Thursday Rams Update

thomasPost-Dispatch Rams beat writer Jim Thomas joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph Jr. on Team 1380 Thursday afternoon.

The Rams practiced inside today for the first time, and they are about as ready as humanly possible to play in a game.

Thomas said if everything goes right they can finish with 9 wins, but there are a lot of question marks.

Scott Linehan has to prove that he is a leader of men and when something goes wrong, he has to rally the troops and convince them that everything will be alright.

Donnie Avery didn’t practice today, but it looks like everyone else will be able to play Sunday. Thomas said they are in as good of shape as they can be in terms of injuries.

Al Saunders demands effort, discipline, focus, preparation, and a certain tempo on the practice field so players know the bar is higher.

Thomas talked about what the Rams need to do on offense against Philadelphia, and he talked about the Eagles having to possibly play without their two starting wide receivers.

Albert Previews Rams Broadcast

albertKenny Albert, who will broadcast the play-by-play for the Rams vs. Eagles game Sunday on Fox, joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph Jr. on Team 1380 Thursday afternoon.

The guys start out joking around about Tony Siragusa and talk about his sideline reporting.

Albert said that it won’t be easy for the Rams this season schedule wise, and he talked about what they can expect facing the Eagles this weekend.

Kenny said in week 1 you never know because strange things happen in season openers because rookies are in their first NFL game and guys are playing on new teams.

It won’t be easy playing in Philadelphia for the Rams, but one thing that they have going for them is that the NFC West will up for grabs.

Gabe talked about how good the offensive line looked Saturday, and he said that it may be a better line than last year even though they lost two four-year starters.

Howie Long Talks Rams & NFL

howieNFL Hall of Famer Howie Long joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph Jr. Wednesday afternoon on Team 1380.

Long said it is tough to watch your son go through the growing pains in the NFL. He said that rookie defensive ends usually struggle early on. Both Vernon Gholston and Chris Long are being asked to make a big transition than how they played in college.

Howie gave Chris the advice of “control what you can control and try to get better every day.”

He said that he doesn’t want to let his son playing for St. Louis impact his job at Fox, and he would rather let someone else at Fox discuss the Rams.

Long also talked about what he expects from different teams around the NFL this season.

Wednesday Rams Report

Post-Dispatch Rams beat writer Jim Thomas joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph Jr. on Team 1380 Wednesday afternoon.

Thomas said the media is really only allowed to watch around 30 minutes of practice at this point, but the official injury reports came out today, and a lot of guys who were injured throughout training camp were not listed on the injury report.

Donnie Avery did not practice but ran in shorts and Thomas doesn’t think he will play Sunday. Drew Bennett was running much better today than on Monday, and Dante Hall looked good.

Pace looked like he is totally back, but it is still a mental thing for Orlando going against a guy who had 12.5 sacks last year.

Thomas said he can’t think of a bigger opening day challenge because of how Philadelphia blitzes and goes after an offense.

Jim hasn’t seen Ricky Manning Jr. get work anywhere except on the scout team. Fakhir Brown looks good running around, but Thomas is still skeptical about Brown till he sees him make a tackle.

Thomas would be stunned if Steven Jackson got 25 touches in the opener, and the Rams will play a committee with Antonio Pittman. Jackson’s had two fully padded practices since he’s been back with virtually no contact.

The guys previewed the Eagles and talked about trying to stop Donavan McNabb and Brian Westbrook.

Tuesday Rams Report

thomasPost-Dispatch Rams beat writer Jim Thomas joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph Jr. on Team 1380 Tuesday afternoon.

Thomas said that the Rams are still looking around at available players and had two cornerbacks visit Rams Park this afternoon including Fernando Bryant who started this preseason for New England.

Thomas talked about the guys that the Rams have picked off the waiver wire already including Brannon Condren from the Colts and Ricky Manning, Jr.

Jim thinks that Manning Jr. will help the Rams a lot this season in part because of what he brings a lot to the locker room in playoff experience and playing in two Super Bowls.

The guys discussed Orlando Pace’s injury condition, and Thomas said the Rams are trying to get something going with Willie Anderson to be a backup if he will sign with them.

The only player not dressed for practice yesterday was Donnie Avery so unless he has some miraculous recovery, he won’t play Sunday. Dante Hall looked good, Drew Bennett is a little iffy, Fakhir Brown practiced Monday, but he hardly had any contact with anyone. Thomas said that if Brown can’t play, Manning Jr. may start, and he could wear the defensive headset during the game because he doesn’t know all of the plays yet.

Williamson Previews BMW Championship

St. Louisan Jay Williamson joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph Jr. on Team 1380 Tuesday afternoon.

Williamson said he is thrilled to death to be playing in the BMW championship in St. Louis. “It is a victory for me to be here, playing this event,” Jay said.

The guys talked about Jay rebuilding his career, and he continues to look at what he will do when he can’t play anymore. Williamson said he misses his family when he is on the road, but he is very fortunate to be able to play golf for a living.

Williamson talked about how he made it into professional golf by staying consistent and never giving up.

He said that if there was one thing he could upgrade, it would be his putting. He feels pressure in his hands, and he said sometimes he lets his nerves overcome him.

Cards Update with Strauss

Post-Dispatch Cardinals beat writer Joe Strauss joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph Jr live from Arizona.

Strauss said the team has put everything into the first five months of the season, and he just doesn’t know how much they have left. “Reality is starting to set in.”

The guys discussed if it would have helped the team if there was a deal made before the trade deadline, and if the team has changed its “untouchable” view of Colby Rasmus.

Strauss thinks people will be interested to see how Jason Motte will translate into the major leagues, and how Tony LaRussa incorporates the new guys into the mix.

The team has to find out if Chris Carpenter can pitch through his relief appearances the rest of the season so they know what they have next year.

The guys also talked about Albert Pujols’ chances of winning the MVP, David Eckstein being traded to Arizona, and they discussed the wild card race.

Friday Rams Update

thomasPost-Dispatch Rams beat writer Jim Thomas joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph Jr., on Team 1380 Friday afternoon.

The guys talked about the Rams final preseason game Thursday and Thomas thought the Rams would’ve done better than just slowing down the Kansas City offense.

The injuries to Dante Hall, Drew Bennett, and Donnie Avery may influence the Rams to keep an extra receiver early on in the season.

Thomas said Eric Bassey may have played his way onto the team last night with the turnover and good special teams play. He is a smooth tackler.

Travis Minor will still likely be kept over Lance Ball, but Jim said that Ball probably played his way onto the practice squad.

Thomas said that David Vobora will be on the team, but if they had more depth he would be cut. Fellow 7th round pick Chris Chamberlain played his way onto the roster by leading the team in tackles during the preseason.

Mizzou Broadcaster Previews Game

kadlecJohn Kadlec joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph Jr., on The Bernie Miklasz Show on Team 1380 Friday afternoon.

Keys are to play very good defense and get ball back from Illinois because the Illini have a good offense. At the same time Illinois needs to play great defense.

One of the best defenses Missouri has ever had because they have so much speed. All the guys back on defense have great experience, and the guys think they can take it to a higher level this year.

In order to be better than last year, every kid has to play better than they did last year.

John thinks Derrick Washington is on the threshold of being a great back, and Mizzou won’t lose much by having Washington replace Tony Temple.

The guys also talked about the great national exposure the University is getting this season.

Mike Alden Talks Mizzou

mizzouUniversity of Missouri Athletic Director Mike Alden joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph Jr., on The Bernie Miklasz Show Friday afternoon.

Mike said they are looking at possibly playing the rivalry game at each school’s campus once in awhile. He said they know the game has a bowl atmosphere in St. Louis, but it has to be considered.

The Mizzou vs. Kansas game at Arrowhead was set up as a two year agreement so there is nothing in place this past year. There were 80,000 in attendance last year, and the electricity around the event was unlike any other college football game Alden has ever attended.

The guys talked about changing the years of mediocrity at Mizzou, and Alden said that a key was keeping Gary Pinkel around even through rough times.

Mizzou football achieving success is a great benefit to the school’s other teams, and Alden talked about the basketball team trying to turn around.

They are trying to create a legacy for Mizzou that would keep coaches there and make people wonder why they would consider leaving.

Rams Pregame Preview

thomasPost-Dispatch Rams beat writer Jim Thomas joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph Jr., live from Kansas City before the Rams game on Team 1380 Thursday afternoon.

Fans in Kansas City are bracing for a terrible season for the Chiefs.

The Rams feel good about Adam Goldberg, but they really don’t have a fourth tackle so they will watch the waiver wire for someone to pick up.

Thomas said he thought the Rams would play more of their starting offensive line to protect Trent Green tonight, but they are playing backups and rookies besides Nick Leckey.

Voice of Illinois Previews Opener

illiniBrian Barnhart, voice of the Fighting Illini football team for the past seven seasons, joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph Jr. on the Bernie Miklasz Show Thursday afternoon to talk about Illinois’ upcoming season.

With the Arch Rivalry game only two days away, Barnhart talked about the excitement and anticipation around the Illinois campus. “It has the atmosphere of a bowl game,” he said.

Much of that excitement comes from the fact that, according to Barnhart, the Illini are coming into this game with more confidence then last year. “Their mental approach of the team is better,” he said. Instead of the players hoping they can play up to the potential that the coaches expect, they know they can.

One of Illinois’ biggest improvements going into this season is the defensive line. Because of their depth and talent, Barnhart expects they’ll be able to match up well against Missouri’s offensive line.

Barnhart does, however, think the kicking game is still a concern for Illinois. “The job is still pretty wide open,” he said. Out of the four kickers to choose from, the Illini will only be able to carry two.

On the offensive side, Barnhart said that running back Daniel Dufrene will be the starter on Saturday, but does not know if he is durable enough to last the entire game. Barnhart wouldn’t be surprised if the backfield was shared time between Dufrene and three other running backs.

Looking at the season overall, Barnhart thinks the Illini must defeat Mizzou on Saturday and win several of their road games against other Big 10 rivals to win 10 games. Otherwise, Barnhart sees them winning around eight games. But the biggest improvement he’s noticed is that Illinois has a surplus of players that could start at each position. Because of this depth, he’s confident about what lies ahead for the Illini.

Wednesday Rams Update

thomasPost-Dispatch Rams beat writer Jim Thomas joined The Bernie Miklasz Show on Team 1380 Wednesday afternoon.

Drew Bennett comes across as laid back, but Thomas thinks that he is embarrassed by his play last season and wants to play better but guys have different levels of motivation.

The guys discussed Seattle being picked as the team to beat in the NFC West by most analysts, Isaac Bruce’s prediction that the 49ers will score eight touchdowns a game,

Dante Hall was moving very well today, and he should be ready for the opener. Joe Klopfenstein was back out there, but the other guys with injuries sat out today.

Thomas thinks the Rams will keep six wide receivers, but they have a lot of guys in camp who really haven’t stepped it up, including Reche Caldwell and Marques Hagans.

Jim said if the team has a normal year injury wise, they will win three more games than last year. He said there is 8-8 talent on this team, but a lot of things have to go the Rams way.

Brewers GM Discusses Team

melvinBrewers General Manager Doug Melvin joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph Jr., on Team 1380 Wednesday afternoon.

Melvin said he doesn’t think anyone thought CC Sabathia would be almost perfect, but what he brings to the club besides his pitching is priceless. Doug feels that Sabathia has been with the Brewers for the past seven years because of how he has gotten along with everyone in the organization.

Sabathia will be a free agent this off-season, and the guys discussed the possibility of the Cardinals going after him and the Brewers resigning him.

After the altercation with Prince Fielder in the dugout, Doug feels that the veteran players helped diffuse the situation, and the Brewers have a good group of veteran players that they haven’t had in the past. He said in previous years the Brewers were pretty young, and the veterans didn’t really gel with the rest of the team.

Melvin said he doesn’t have a problem with the team untucking their shirts after wins. He said he took it as a tough day’s work is over and it’s time to unwind. He doesn’t believe his players are out to show up anyone in anyway.

The guys also talked about the use of instant replay in major league baseball.

Fighting Illini Preview

illiniMark Tupper of the Decatur Herald-Review joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph, Jr., on The Bernie Miklasz Show on Team 1380 Wednesday afternoon.

Tupper thinks the Illini will be able to get after Chase Daniel a little Saturday. They want to get in there and get him on the move and make throws on the run. They are also counting on not letting Mizzou run the ball very well. Last year they were able to keep the running game down, and they want to do that again.

Illinois’ running game will start out as a committee of four backs. Daniel Dufrene will start out getting the bulk of the carries and then Troy Pollard. Jason Ford is a bigger guy and can handle the ball near the goal line.

Tupper thinks that Saturday’s game will be very entertaining even for viewers who don’t have an interest in Missouri or Illinois.

Mike Kelly Tigers Preview

mizzouMissouri Tigers broadcaster Mike Kelly joined Bernie Miklasz and Jay Randolph Jr., on The Bernie Miklasz Show on Team 1380 Tuesday afternoon.

Kelly thinks that this year’s Illinois team will be better than last season if Juice Williams can throw the football efficiently because the defense is very good.

Mizzou’s defense is pretty good, and they have depth, talent, and speed, which had been lacking in recent seasons.

For Missouri to be able to beat Oklahoma for the Big 12 Championship, both lines have to step up because of how great Oklahoma’s linemen are.

Blaine Gabbert has been banged up a little bit so his progress has slowed a bit. Chase Patton goes into this week in the backup role, but the competition isn’t complete.

Kelly talked about how the current coaching staff has found guys with talent and developed them into good players.

Coach Pinkel seems to be handling everything pretty well, but it might not be as difficult as it once was because everyone in the program is on the same page.

Friday Rams Report

thomas Jim Thomas joined The Roll Home on Team 1380 Friday afternoon with the latest news on the Rams as they prepare for their second preseason game Saturday night.

With Steven Jackson’s holdout being the hot topic around town, Thomas reported that nothing new has changed. Rams president Jay Zygmunt has not been seen around the team the past few days, and Thomas suspects that he could be talking with Eugene Parker, Jackson’s agent. Jackson has been fined a total of $330,000 so far.

With tomorrow night’s game against the Chargers coming up, Thomas said that the veterans on the team have acknowledged their need to play better. Quarterback Marc Bulger and the rest of the vets that are suited up will play most of the first half. Noting Bulger’s struggles last game, Thomas said that Bulger needs to settle in a little bit during the actual game time. He also said he’d like to see Bulger do some more quick-pass plays to get his confidence going.

Offensive lineman Orlando Pace is also expected to play into the second quarter, and Thomas noted that Pace has been practicing a little more since former Rams coach Dick Vermiel told him to when he visited Rams camp. Pace has expressed that, despite not taking any part in any one-on-one pass-rush drills during practices, most of his preparation is mental at this point.

Looking in detail into tomorrow night’s game, Thomas talked about what to watch for, including the run defense, better tackling and the first offensive unit scoring a touchdown. Specifically with players, Thomas in interested in watching Pace, the Rams backup quarterbacks, and rookie defensive end Chris Long. “He just needs to relax and be himself,” Thomas said.

Carpenter Disabled; Barton Activated

carpThe St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have placed pitcher Chris Carpenter (right posterior shoulder strain) on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 11, and have activated outfielder Brian Barton from the 15-day disabled list.

Barton had been on the D.L. since July 6 with a right wrist fracture. He batted .260 with 3 home runs and 11 RBI in 19 games for Memphis (AAA) during his injury rehabilitation assignment. The rookie outfielder was batting .246 with 2 HR's and 11 RBI in 63 games with the Cardinals at the time of his injury.

Carpenter made three starts for the Cardinals after coming off the disabled list last month and was 0-1 with a 1.88 ERA. He left last Sunday's game in Chicago after 5.1 innings when he experienced discomfort in his throwing arm.

Vermeil visited Rams Camp in Mequon, Wisconsin, for a few days, and he said he really enjoyed it a lot. It was his first time at a training camp since he left coaching, and it was “exhilarating” getting back on the field. He said it was like a homecoming catching up with guys like Al Saunder, Ray Agnew, and D’Marco Farr among others.

The former Rams head coach talked about what advice he would have for the Rams. He said that the Rams need to keep getting better players because when you get better players, the coaches look better. The Offensive Line has to continue to improve.

Missouri Tigers Football Head Coach Gary Pinkel joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on The Roll Home on Team 1380 Thursday afternoon.

Coach Pinkel said his level of comfort is no different this year than any other year. He said he just focuses on getting the backup players better and getting the veteran players to play better than ever before. There are things they need to do better, and there are a lot of things they need to clean up before the season.

He said he just stays in his little world and doesn’t listen to the radio or read the newspaper so he can focus on his goals and stay at the task on hand.

Memphis Redbirds Update

redbirdsMemphis Redbirds broadcaster Steve Selby joined Joe Zydlo on The Batting Cage on Team 1380 Thursday evening.

Steve said that Jess Todd pitched well in his first start at Triple-A, but he doesn’t look at the line, he just looks
at how the kid attacks hitters,
which Jess did a great job of.

Steve mentioned that the Round Rock batters said they had a tough time picking up the ball out of Todd’s hand.

Jason Motte looked really good against Round Rock, and Steve said he pitched a “Major League inning for the first time all year.”

Adam Wainwright looked better in his second outing, and according to Steve, his fastball had more life and command and was beginning to run away from the hitters a bit.  Selby also mentioned Wainwright’s breaking ball has been good since he started rehab.

Blake Hawksworth finally got the monkey off his back by finally winning a game with Memphis.

P.J. Walters was discussed and Steve says he walks too many batters and will need to bring that down if he hopes to get to the majors, but he has pitched well.

Derek Stanley was wearing an offensive jersey today, but Jim thinks he may see some action for the rest of the preseason on the defensive side because the Rams are so depleted in the secondary.

OJ Atogwe sat out today because when he tried to come back yesterday, his injury wasn’t fully healed.  Fakhir Brown is still out, but Jim said he should be close to coming back and Thomas thinks that privately maybe some guys are wondering why he hasn’t come back yet. Jackson Looking for New Agent?

jacksonNational football writer Howard Balzer has reported that Steven Jackson may be looking for a new agent because he isn't happy that his current agent hasn't been able to get anywhere with the Rams.

The Rams have had two full weeks of training camp now without Jackson, and there have been no conversations between the Rams and Jackson’s agent, Eugene Parker, since camp opened July 25.

There is a five day waiting period before Jackson would be able to hire a new agent if he decides to fire Parker, which would push potential negotiations back till at least next Wednesday.

The Rams have remained firm that they will not negotiate any contracts unless Jackson is in camp, and there is speculation that the two sides are not far apart. There are reports that Jackson is looking for around  $20 million guaranteed, and the Rams are a few million under that.

Jackson is on either his third or fourth agent in four years. Jackson didn't hire Parker till this past June after former agent Gary Uberstine dropped him as a client in the spring. Rocky Arceneaux was Jackson’s  first agent after he was drafted, and it is believed he hired Lamont Smith/Peter  Schaeffer for a brief time.

Thursday Rams Camp Report

thomasPost-Dispatch Rams beat writer Jim Thomas joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on The Roll Home on Team 1380 Thursday afternoon in the middle of the second practice. Jim watched the defense practice more today, and everything was a lot calmer with no fights so far.

Chris Long uses his hands, and you can see the polish, but he is still learning the defense. He has been going up against Brandon Torrey and Mike Otto. He’s had a couple good pass rushes against the one guy and has been shut down by the other. The coaches are treating him like any other rookie and they are yelling in his ear the whole time. Long had Vince Young running for his life at one point, which led to a bad throw and interception.

Joe heard that Perez has been pitching better recently, and there isn’t a better time than now to have him close, but it comes down to Tony giving him the ball. Joe thinks Perez being called up was because of last night even though the club is trying to spin it otherwise.

Jim said there is no sign of Steven Jackson yet. Steven’s agent Eugene Parker and Rams officials were talking as late as 9:30/10pm last night. Thomas thinks that Rams fans shouldn’t worry about it unless he doesn’t show up over the weekend.

If you have a contract you should be in camp, but Jim said he can see the players’ point of view because teams can cut players when they don’t want them anymore.

Jackson not showing up on time is also a downer for the organization because he is the cover boy for their marketing campaign.

Latimore gets Top 10 World Ranking

bullThe latest IBF world rankings came out today and St Louis’ Deandre “The Bull” Latimore is ranked as the No. 6 junior middleweight contender in the world.

Latimore was recently ranked outside of the top 10 before his upset win over former No. 1 contender Sechew Powell last month in New York.

Steve Smith, president of Rumble Times Promotions, says this is just another step in Deandre’s quest to become one of the best fighters in the world.

Smith says now that the rankings have come out, this should help “The Bull” find an opponent for his next fight.
