Pinkel Discusses Team, Season
Missouri Tigers Football Head Coach Gary Pinkel joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on The Roll Home on Team 1380 Thursday afternoon.
Coach Pinkel said his level of comfort is no different this year than any other year. He said he just focuses on getting the backup players better and getting the veteran players to play better than ever before. There are things they need to do better, and there are a lot of things they need to clean up before the season.
He said he just stays in his little world and doesn’t listen to the radio or read the newspaper so he can focus on his goals and stay at the task on hand.
Pinkel said he puts a lot on his seniors, and they are very driven. They have the chance to finish their careers with numbers that will be better than any other guys in the history of the school, and they take it seriously.
“The players are fun to be around, and it isn’t Gary Pinkel’s team---it’s our team.”
Two things have to happen for Mizzou to have success, according to Pinkel:
- The team has most of its offensive starters back and 10 of 11 starters back on defense, and all the players need to be able to say they had the best year they have ever had playing football.
- The young players have to get better so they are in position to play incase of injuries.
Coach thinks they will be better against the run this year because everyone is back and they all have more experience.
Tight end Andrew Jones is a highly touted player out of Kansas City area is doing really well and will likely play. Chase Coffman will be back in a week. He had 3 little screws inserted in his finger, but he’ll be fine.
Punter Jake Harry is doing really well and has had a great summer. He is very consistent. Gary said he always tells his players they play in the game like they practice.
Pinkel is fine with all the media attention and he thinks it’s great for the program and the University. They just have to manage it for the players, and Pinkel said he gets a lot of compliments on how players conduct themselves.
They haven’t decided anything on freshman Blaine Gabbert yet. He strained his shoulder, and he will miss some practices but will hopefully be back this weekend. Gabbert will compete just like everyone else because they need to know who is the best guy to step in if Daniel were to be injured.
Coach Pinkel said that the game against Illinois in St. Louis will have a bowl game atmosphere, and it may be the most hyped game between the two teams in the history of the schools.
“We’re going to have to play our best game if we want a chance to win it.”

Mizzou Camp Report
Columbia Tribune beat writer for the Tigers Dave Matter joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on The Roll Home on Team 1380 Tuesday afternoon to discuss Missouri’s first scrimmage Tuesday morning.
Chase Coffman is out, but that creates a chance for true freshman Andrew Jones to see if he is ready go play in the Big 12. He played a lot today in the scrimmage and made some nice catches.
Mizzou played a lot with two tight ends the last couple years, but they are real flexible with what they can do with what they have available. If a guy is ready they will put him in and switch things around.
Tailback De’Vion Moore showed some real moves and a lot of speed today, and Matter thinks they will find a way to get Moore involved. Coach Pinkel has just been raving about him for the past year, and he showed today that he can get it done.
Matter thinks the coaches are getting the depth charts filled out and focusing on which freshman can contribute this year right now, and they aren’t thinking about their first game with Illinois yet.
Lot of expectations for Blaine Gabbert, and he definitely has talent.

Coach Zook Previews Illini
The Fighting Illini Head Football Coach Ron Zook joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker Tuesday afternoon to preview their season.
Coach Zook said his has been very impressed with freshman Jason Ford out of Belleville, IL. Coach is very pleased with how he runs and catches the ball, and he is a little ahead of where they thought he would be.
Zook said the Illini will likely have a running back by committee this season.
Quarterback Juice Williams is completely different from a year ago. He is so much more relaxed and confident. Zook said he’s happy for him to see his maturity grow. They tried to keep the pressure off of him for the past two years so he can gain confidence and continue to improve, and he’s ready to take the reigns. You can tell he is more confident.
There are so many things that a college football player has on his mind. We try to keep pressure off of them and help them have time to focus on school and have some social time.
Jay Lehman brought so much to the table as both a player and leader, and Coach said he has to wait and see if they have someone to step up to replace him.
Missouri is a great football team. Coach Pinkel has done a great job, and it’s an experienced club. Zook said that their contest against Mizzou is a very important game, and they will play it the best they can. However, if they don’t come out on top they have to remember that they have 11 more games to play.
Coach thinks the biggest difference between this year and last is that the guys feel they have a chance to win if they do the things the coaches are telling them, where last year the team was still learning how to win.
The guys also talked about Vontae Davis, London Davis, and the fan appreciation day for the Fighting Illini which is Sunday.

Mizzou Camp Report
Gabe DeArmond of PowerMizzou.com joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on The Roll Home on Team 1380 Thursday afternoon to talk about Mizzou’s camp so far.
Gabe said that for the most part all the starters are set in their positions, and all this camp is about is getting to August 30 for their first game against Illinois. Gabe can’t see many starting positions change.
Jerrel Jackson wasn’t even on the radar of most schools’ recruiting, but Mizzou did their homework to try to figure out why no one else recruited him, and now Jackson is probably the best freshman wide out in camp.
Notre Dame Transfer Munir Prince (out of DeSmet High in St. Louis) has to sit out this year because of the transfer so he will be a red shirt. He is listed on the depth chart as a safety, but he has been working out with the cornerbacks, and the team sees him as a corner.
Zaviar Gooden looks like an NFL middle linebacker and not a college safety. Coach Pinkel believes that a lot of guys benefit later on from getting experience as a freshman even if it is just on special teams so Gabe thinks a lot of freshmen will get that experience this year.
Gary Pinkel treats most of the kids the same, but Chase Daniel can do some things that other kids can’t. There are a few kids who will get a lot of attention, but guys like Daniel and Jeremy Maclin are used to the spotlight and pressure.
Blaine Gabbert clearly has a great arm and has made some great throws, but he has also made some throws that he shouldn’t have. He has had some moments, but he needs to learn some stuff too.
Gabe has a feeling that Derrick Washington will be really, really good. When you add the yardage he can gain from receptions, then he will replace Tony Temple’s production last year.
Jimmy Jackson has had some great practices, and Gabe said every team needs a guy like that in the backfield.
Brian Coulter has a twisted ankle but besides that they haven’t suffered any serious injuries.

August 4
Mizzou Camp Report
Dave Matter joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on The Roll Home on Team 1380 Monday afternoon live from Mizzou's first practice this season.
Dave said you have to start at ground zero when you have so many new guys coming in. They have to know what to expect at practice, and go over some fundamentals. He thinks things will get more interesting in about a week when they can practice in pads.
Matter thinks Mizzou will be better defensively from the beginning of the season this year being creative with different schemes and coverages. They can do more from the beginning because they have so many personnel back, and that could give them an edge.
If there is a concern on defense it would be developing depth because you never know who is going to get hurt. Linebacker Van Alexander who got hurt right before the spring game, was on the field today practicing but he had the red no contact jersey on.
Kansas State has brought in around 20 junior college players, which could blow up in their face or they could step in and the Wild Cats could be a sleeper. Colorado is capable of beating anybody in the Big 12.
August 30th will be an exciting day for St. Louis because the Mizzou vs. Illinois game should be a great match-up.
Dave thinks this team has a chance to be better than last year, and he thinks they have a chance to play for the National Championship.
Dave thinks there could be some real incentive to playing Blaine Gabbert if a situation comes up in a game or even in practice; however, that would be a rough move against Chase Patton who has done everything he has been asked. If Chase Daniel went down with an injury, do you go with the 5th year senior or the true freshman.
Wes Kemp who is a freshman out of DeSmet Jesuit High in St. Louis, looks like a college veteran, and Dave thinks he will get playing time for sure this season.

Mizzou Insider Gabe DeArmond Report
Gabe DeArmond of PowerMizzou.com joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on The Roll Home on Team 1380 Thursday.
The Tigers’ basketball team has received a commitment from point guard Mike Dixon out of Lee’s Summit West High. Dixon is ranked #100 by Rivals.com Highest ranked kid that they have signed since Mike Anderson has been here.
Gabe said that Mizzou has a chance to get 2 of the top 100 ranked players in the country.
Turning to football, Gabe talked about St. Louis area top 100 prospect (#88) Sheldon Richardson deciding he might want to look around a little bit after getting an offer from Miami. DeArmond said Richardson is Mizzou’s highest rated commitment so they will want to work hard to keep him interested in Missouri.
DeArmond also talked about his keys for Mizzou to have a successful season, including wide receivers stepping up when teams focus on shutting down Jeremy Maclin. Gabe said that Mizzou has potential on the offensive line, but players have to step up to replace the graduating seniors from last year.

Mizzou Insider Gabe DeArmond Report

Gabe DeArmond of PowerMizzou.com joined The Roll Home to talk about the Tigers on Thursday afternoon.
The guys start out talking about the Missouri vs. Illinois game, and Gabe thinks that if Mizzou loses they still have a shot at the National Title where as if the Illini lose, they may be out of the top 25.
Chase Daniel is a counselor at a camp for 11 of the top quarterbacks in the country.
The guys also talked about the other programs in the Big 12, including Kansas, Colorado, and Oklahoma.

Gabe DeArmond Mizzou Update
Summary by Pat Morris
Gabe DeArmond from PowerMizzou.com joined Randy Karraker, Andy Strickland, and Joe Zydlo on The Roll Home on Team 1380 Thursday.
Gabe said that he thinks the program is going pretty well. We basically are going to go and do what we did last year. He added that the Illinois game will be a huge game to start off the season.
“If I were scheduling the games, I wouldn’t want to schedule that (game that early).” Gabe thinks that this is an extremely important game for Mizzou, but that is the game to lose if they are going to lose a game early on in the season.
In relation to the coaching staff, they will motivate the team through persuading them that they did not really gain a lot last year (no big 12 title, no BCS game, etc).
With the Tigers reporting to practice on August 4, Gabe said that one of the team's biggest concerns is to work on the pass-rush.

Anderson Grants Release To Lawrence
Lawrence led Mizzou in minutes played and field goal attempts last season
University of Missouri Head Basketball Coach Mike Anderson announced that he has granted junior guard Keon Lawrence a release from his scholarship.
Lawrence played in 32 games for the Tigers last season as a sophomore and averaged a team-leading 29.2 minutes and led the club with 307 field goal attempts. Lawrence also ranked third on the team with 11.0 points per game and was third with 77 assists.
“The well-being of our student-athletes is always a chief concern for us, and with that, I have always wanted my players to be happy. I feel by granting Keon his release it’s in the best interest of both him and our program. We appreciate Keon’s efforts at Missouri and wish him nothing but the best.”
Despite the release of Lawrence, the Tiger backcourt remains highly competitive. Mizzou welcomes seven total newcomers to the roster and returns starting guards J.T. Tiller and Matt Lawrence, along with starting forwards DeMarre Carroll and Leo Lyons. Among those seven newcomers are four backcourt players, including junior transfer Zaire Taylor, who becomes eligible after sitting out the 2007-08 season. A 6-foot-4 off-guard, Taylor averaged 10.3 points and 4.9 rebounds as a sophomore at Delaware in 2006-07 and is known for his defensive prowess.
Freshman guard Miguel Paul will add instant depth at the point guard position and was a two-time all-state performer in Florida after leading Kathleen High School to back-to-back Class 4A State Championship games. Paul enters Missouri as one of the nation’s top 15 point guard prospects.
High-scoring guard Marcus Denmon lit up the scoreboard throughout his high school career in Kansas City and fulfilled a life-long dream by signing with Missouri. The 6-foot-2 guard won the DiRenna Award as the top player in the Kansas City Metro Area last year and averaged 28.5 point and 5.8 rebounds en route to all-state honors. He was also named the Missouri Player of the Year by MaxPreps.com.
Freshman sharp-shooter Kim English rounds out the list of newcomers and comes to Mizzou as a Top 100 prospect nationally. The 6-foot-6 Baltimore native earned MVP honors at Notre Dame Prep (Fitchburg, Mass.) last season with 17.3 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game and is ranked the No. 5 prep school player nationally by Scout.com.
Paul, Denmon and English, along with fellow freshmen Laurence Bowers and Steve Moore will compete this Saturday at the 11th annual Demetrius Johnson Charitable Foundation All-Star Game in St. Louis. The game will be held at Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis and game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Mizzou Coach Talks about Win Today
University of Missouri coach Tim Jamieson joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker Wednesday after Mizzou's win against Texas in the Big 12 conference opener Wednesday morning.
The games that could come back to haunt us are the ones from our conference.
Tim said there is still an outside chance that Mizzou could be a #1 seed and host some games if they win the tournament, but he said realistically they will probably be a 2 seed.
With the way they are setting up the pitching staff, Mizzou is capable to shutting other teams down, and the hitting has really come along in the past few weeks.
Jamieson talked about the impact of moving Kyle Gibson to the bullpen earlier in the season, and his 2.2 scoreless innings of work Wednesday. He said that before the move, Kyle was a great starting pitcher, but Mizzou didn't have anyone who they could rely on late in the game.
Tim thinks Aaron Crow has a chance to be National Pitcher of the year.
Mizzou has had to overcome their facilities and the stigma of the Big 12 North in recruiting, but now kids feel they can come and improve draft status and excel as a Tiger.
"It's a good time to be a Tiger," Tim said.

Leo Lyons Will Stay at Mizzou

Lyons made the decision on Thursday after meeting with Head Coach Mike Anderson and his staff, as well as family members and teammates throughout the last two weeks.
“I just felt like it was the right decision,” Lyons said.
“I really want to graduate, and by staying at Missouri, that will happen. Graduating is a goal that has been important to both my mom and I, so that weighed heavily into my decision. Second, I want to become the best basketball player I can be. This process over the last two weeks has allowed me to get feedback from NBA organizations and now I get a chance to use that my advantage.”

Mizzou Report
Gabe DeArmond of PowerMizzou.com joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on the Roll Home Friday. Gabe thinks there will probably be around 15,000 in attendance for the Spring Game tomorrow, and Mizzou would be very happy with 20,000.
The starters will all play the first half of the game, and it will be the 1st team offense vs. 2nd team defense and vice versa.
Gabe said that there aren't many questions going into the game because they pretty much know the starting lineups on both sides of the ball. He doesn't know if they will have any more answers tomorrow than they have today.
Mizzou is getting to the point where football is a year round deal for the fans.
Recruits from OK, MI, KS, TX, and Sheldon Richardson among other guys from eastern Missouri is supposed to be at the game.
Gabe also said that at RB this year, Jimmy Jackson is the starter right now with Derrick Washington behind him. Devin Moore is a close third. He said we will probably see a 50-30-20 percentage split of carries and it wouldn't surprise him if any of them were the starter against Illinois this fall.

Coach Pinkel Talks Football
Missouri Football Coach Gary Pinkel joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on the Roll Home Thursday to talk about the upcoming Spring Game and how things are shaping up for this coming season.
Pinkel said there are a lot of things in place and they just have to keep working hard. He tells his players there are certain ways to get better including knowledge, working on the fundamentals of their position. "You can't waste a rep during practice," he said.
“I tell the players that their focus and habits they develop in workouts and lifting weights, will ultimately determine how fast they are ready to play for a Championship.”
Coach said that the players stepping into roles of players who aren't back with the team are playing well so far. They lost 2 starters on the offensive line and 2 back-ups, so 4 of top 10 lineman are gone. Mizzou recruited well, but the line is the area that needs to step up, and there are still decisions to be made on who will be starting.
on Bad Conduct of Team?----Pinkel said they are no different than any team in the country in that they have a bunch of young guys and are going to have some problems. However, he said hopefully they will keep it to a minimal.
"We have the responsibility of a great image and do not want to tarnish that," Pinkel said. "We have to work very hard to be a well respected program."
Pinkel also touched on LB depth, the Spring Game Saturday among other topics.

As long as he doesn't sign with an agent, Lyons has the option of returning to Mizzou next season if he goes undrafted.

PowerMizzou.com's Gabe DeArmond talked with Bernie Miklasz and
Randy Karraker on Team 1380
- Gabe thinks there are definite questions if Leo Lyons will return next year. He thinks Mizzou needs him as a go to offensive guy when he is on, and having him next year could be the difference of making the tournament opposed to being a NIT team.
- Mizzou football's spring game will be televised on ESPN-U. Spring ball starts on Tuesday.
- Will Franklin (Vashon High) had a great workout at the Pro Day. He had a vertical jump of 40.5 inches and a broad jump of 10 feet 11 inches today. Will ran a 4.37 forty at the Combine. He will visit 10 NFL cities before the draft, including St. Louis and Kansas City.
- Martin Rucker and Pig Brown did not work out today. They are planning on working out at the next Pro Day in 2 weeks. Pig got hurt exactly 6 months to the day before the draft, and he said he is way ahead of schedule and he's happy with where he's at.

Missouri Valley Commisioner Doug Elgin talked with Bernie Miklasz and
Randy Karraker on Team 1380
When asked about SLU potentially joining the MVC in the future, he said the MVC would like to stay away from having 11 schools, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't have discussions with SLU if there was mutual interest. He said SLU would be a good fit in the MVC.
Elgin said that contrary to reports that the MVC isn't as strong as in years past, they are actually ranked 8th in RPI (last year they were 7th), and the MVC has had 2 teams ranked in the top 20 this years. MVC tournament #1 seed Drake and #2 seed Illinois State have the best shot of making the NCAA tourney this season.
Tickets are available from Ticketmaster or Scottrade Center. Both Taco Bell and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch are offering coupons/discounts on tickets.
