Jeff Luhnow Discusses Minors

toddLuhnow watched Jess Todd pitch his last game and said he knows how to locate his fastball. Todd has also developed a slider to compliment his four seam fastball. He is going to the Futures game at Yankee stadium and will more than likely compete in the Olympics in China.

Jeff said in his opinion there is no doubt Todd will pitch in the major leagues, and he may be in St. Louis out of spring training next year.

Nothing has really changed with Colby Rasmus' approach, but he has improved his numbers and confidence recently. Earlier this year when his numbers suggested he was struggling, he was actually hitting the ball a lot but he was hitting a lot of line drives to the other team. He will put smiles on a lot of faces one day in St. Louis.

"(Colby) is doing everything we wanted him to do and he is right on track," Luhnow said.

John Davidson Talks Free Agency

JDBlues President John Davidson joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on The Roll Home on Team 1380 on Wednesday.

John said they weren't surprised at the size of the offer from Vancouver for David Backes. He said that business is business, but if you are going to make an offer sheet, make a good one. JD said that if the Blues didn't match that offer sheet, they should just "close their doors."

With the salary cap where it is, the Blues--being the equivalent to a small budget baseball team--can't go out and start throwing money at free agents who are going to be getting over paid to begin with.

Many people questioned what Edmonds could bring to the Cubs that they don’t already have, but with a couple of great catches and some big home runs the Cubs fans have welcomed him as one of their own. He brings more to the table than defense and power; he also has been a big help for the young players on the team.

Mulder Back; Izzy Might Go to DL

straussPost-Dispatch Cardinals beat writer Joe Strauss joined the Roll Home on Team 1380 Friday afternoon from Kansas City.

Joe is surprised that the Mulder situation is an open ended situation, it will a day to day situation. He may be in the bullpen for a while at least until Flores comes back but may stay beyond that.

The move was surprising and Joe doesn’t know how it’ll work out. He would have never thought that Mulder would be activated to be a meaningful bullpen specialist. It may turn out to be a smart move.

Mulder is ok with it because he’s back in the Majors. He’d like to be back in the rotation, but he didn’t feel right mechanically in his last bullpen session.

lawKeith Law, the lead baseball analyst for Scouts, Inc, of ESPN.com joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on The Roll Home on Team 1380 Friday afternoon.

Law said that he thinks the Cardinals had one of best first days of anybody in the draft, and he listed them in his top 5 teams.

Keith said that Cards' first pick Brett Wallace was the best pure college hitter in the draft. He first saw him play 2 years ago and repeatedly after that and "all the guy does is hit." He's very muscular especially below the waist. He's an average runner and can play first base and possibly third base. He is very valuable because of his bat, and he should be in the big leagues within 24 months of signing. He should be established as a big league regular in 2011.

Brett said he's played 3rd base this year, and he's gotten more in shape---down to 9% body fat. He's ready to do whatever it takes to get to the big leagues and help the team.

The Cardinals told him that they were looking for an offensive player in the draft and they were eyeing him.

Wallace said that he doesn't think there is a big difference between using a wooden bat compared to an aluminum one. He said, "There might be a small adjustment period but if you can hit, you can hit."

Jeff Luhnow Previews Draft

Cardinals Vice President of Amateur Scouting & Player Development Jeff Luhnow joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on The Roll Home on Team 1380 Tuesday afternoon.

Jeff said he hasn't been in St. Louis for more than a couple days in a long time, and he has been spending 12 to 15 hours a day inside the war room so he hasn't seen much outside lately.

Luhnow said there are 1500 players in the war room right now on magnets, and most people focus on the first round. However, he said that "the draft is often made or lost on the later picks."

There are quite a few players in this draft who could be position players or pitchers. Jeff said their scouts call them safety nets because if they throw them out as a position player and it doesn't work out they could try them as a pitcher. However, they don't want to waste a couple years trying to figure that out and would rather get someone who they can develop right away at the correct position.

Cards Update from Matthew Leach

MLB.com Cardinals reporter Matthew Leach joined Randy Karraker Monday afternoon on The Roll Home on Team 1380.

ankielLeach discussed Rick Ankiel sitting out tonight and whether the catch from yesterday had anything to do with it. They talked about Ankiel’s suprising outfield play, and Leach said he looked a little lost in the beginning (not a natural center fielder) but he is now more polished and seems to be improving every week. How far he has come is really remarkable. The improved defense is a significant part of the Cards’ success this year.

The guys talk about Todd Wellemeyer being a great story on the team this year because he was slotted to be a back of the rotation guy in spring training. Duncan found something he liked in Wellemeyer and he was dead on. Todd cut his walk rate and home runs surrendered and he is the biggest surprise of this team---more so than Ludwick, according to Leach. Matthew thinks he can do it all year.

Cardinals' Pitchers Update

According to Cardinals' pitching coach Dave Duncan Wednesday on The Morning After on Team 1380, Chris Carpenter is making good progress, and he is very optimistic about Carpenter being able to help the Cards in the near future.

mulderMark Mulder has had a mild setback, and Dave said that there is a legitimate question in what will happen with him. Mulder can’t get his arm in the right position and he has no control over it. His arm and elbow seem to drop when he tries to pitch, and Mark is getting frustrated at not getting to the point where he wants to be.

Matt Clement is making slow progress, and the team is looking at him as being close to going on a rehab assignment to see how effective he can be in a competitive environment.

Duncan believes Jason Isringhausen will come back and be a productive pitcher for the Cards. He is really throwing good bullpen sessions down in Florida.

Dan said he doesn't think it's too soon to start a dialogue on many levels about a process of keeping the Rams here in St. Louis.

In the original lease that brought the Rams here in 1995, every ten years the Edward Jones Dome has to be brought up to standards of the top 8 stadiums in the league. The next measuring date is 2015, and it was decided that in 2012, the CVC will submit a plan and the Rams will submit a plan. They will try to find some middle ground and work it out. If they can't agree, there will be an arbitration hearing.

Silver Discusses Rams for Sale

Yahoo.com National football writer Michael Silver joined Bernie Miklasz and Randy Karraker on the Roll Home on Team 1380 Tuesday afternoon for his first radio interview he did in St. Louis.

Michael said that based on the information he has, "the Rams are in play and Los Angeles is in play." However, Mike said he's not convinced that even if the team is sold that they would move to LA.

Silver agreed that there are better teams to move to LA than the Rams, and thinks Jacksonville would top the list. He said that the key from the league perspective is to have a good owner in LA and they would prefer to not have a team there than have the wrong owner in place.

In response to the statement from Ram's owner Chip Rosenbloom stating that the Rams are not for sale, Mike said that this is business with a lot of money involved, and he said that he really doubts that his story has hurt the family.

Brian Anderson needs to work on his glove a little bit and have it ready to catch the ball when it's pitched to him. It's a question of mechanics of keeping his thumb up. He throws the ball well, and he puts the bat on the ball most of the time.

T.J. Oshie came in last night, signed his contract this morning, and I think he chances are pretty good of making the team. If he is willing and able and smart enough to, he will play center. Lars Eller just played for Denmark in the World Championships, and got some great experience. He is only 19, and he has great offensive skill. His dad is in the Denmark hockey hall of fame.
